The hood Bill is referring to should be on the right hand side of the tractor. Ford hoods are hinged along the centre. There are two black catches that you turn 90 agrees and lift the hood. The catches are on the side of the hood. Mechanic and I just finished doing the brake actuators in the rear axle of my 7840. Huge job, check the fluid reservoir and get the correct fluid for it, think it is LHM mineral brake fluid I get mine from NH so I know it is the right stuff. Sounds like a manual is needed, workshop repair manual is also handy for the 40 series tractors.
