Using a hd oil that has all the additive packages is much more important than using a full synthetic base oil. The additives must be there no matter which base oil is used. Simi and blends are fine unless your above/near the arctic circle. In which case a full synthetic oil will be needed.
Now, with that being said.... HD oils have very high tbn or base numbers that super cleans the engine over time. There are a few cases where switching to a hd oil has actually cleaned up the engine and remove sludge so that eventually bad gaskets and seals were now exposed. Thus cleaning them up made the old porous parts start to leak oil. The oil does not destroy the gaskets/seals, just removes years of sludge, very slowly as you use it. Had an massey harris 33 that the oil actually clean the bottom of the oil pan up, exposing many tiny pin holes that had formed due to trapped water condensation over the years. Took a liberal coating of epoxy(jb weld) to seal up all the 30 fine holes.
