I have a 2005 5105 JD that has developed a strange problem. When I turn the key on, the safety alarm emits a weak screech and the tach needle jumps around and then stops at a random spot each time. It is supposed to deflect full scale and return to zero before starting. Once the engine is started,it will indicate a higher RPM than the engine is actually running. You can really tell it when cutting and you set the throttle to show 2200RPM but the cutter is turning slower and tractor power is lower. Sometimes I can go through the start sequence 4-5 times and it will behave normally. I thoroughly cleaned all the electrical sockets and plugs this afternoon with CRC electronics cleaner and hoped that would solve the issue but it didn t. I have also made certain that both battery cables are tight. It may be a ground issue in the instrument wiring harness or an expensive instrument cluster. Also this tractor has a speed sensor that works with what looks like a gear attached to the injector pump. I have a shop manual on DVD But it does not address this issue. Any ideas?
