A couple of things to consider...
How much does this get used, and how important is it that it runs?
Good points about points:
They are simple and usually can be made to run in an emergency.
They are relatively inexpensive and generally available locally.
Bad points about points:
Points do not like sitting unused for extended periods of time, they tend to corrode and not make contact when it's time to run again.
Points do not like worn distributor shaft bearings/bushings. They will not stay set, which will cause erratic performance and short point life.
All points, condensers, and related ignition parts are now foreign made and are known to be poor quality or bad out of the box. Even though the points you have may have lasted 20 years, don't expect that from the new ones. Never discard a good, working condenser!
The Pertronix kits are very reliable and well made, with excellent customer service. They will last indefinitely when properly installed and the proper coil or coil/resistor combo is used. If the coil you have is working with points, it will work with the conversion kit.
The kit is forgiving of a worn distributor, but the centrifugal advance still needs to work. If you do convert, it would be a good time to remove and dismantle the distributor, inspect and lube everything, put it back like it should be because this should be the last time to deal with ignition problems for a long time if done properly.
