I did inframe overhauls of 2 Farmall C's this summer. I attached the new valve cover gasket to the valve cover with Permatex. I can't remember which type of Permatex it was - just the black thick stuff. Indian Head is another similar gasket sealer in a bottle with a swab. I put a nice layer of Permatex on the surface and placed the new gasket on that surface while alining all of the bolt holes. Once it was all lined up and bonded somewhat (5 minutes) I flipped it over on a smooth level surface and slightly weighted the valve cover. Before I left to let it dry I did recheck alinement of the bolt holes in the valve cover to the bolt holes in the gasket. When I put the valve cover on the head I did not seal the head to the gasket surface - that way the valve cover can be taken off to retorque the head bolts after a good warm up and in the future to check the valve/rocker arm clearance.
