When I made my living as an auto mechanic in the 70s and 80s all the shops I worked at used the yellow 3m super weather strip adhesive part no 8001 to glue the gasket to the valve cover and nothing on the head side. Lay the flange of the valve cover on the edge of the work bench with the valve cover upside down and tap the bolt holes back flat with a hammer before sticking the gasket to the cover. Put a small strip of adhesive on the valve cover flange and press gasket in place then pull gasket off and wave it in the air for a few seconds then put the gasket back on in the right position because it will stick where you put it. I don't know if they even make the adhesive anymore.
