White smoke means fuel is getting past injectors, but compression heat is too low OR timing is off OR both. Which engine? The early 1650 is the anergy cell diesel, and late engine is direct injected diesel. Pump MIGHT be 180 degrees off as it turns one half engine speed. Pull the valve cover, turn crank to TDC and watch the number SIX rocker arms. Rock the crank back and forth and see that the number SIX rockers move as this will confirm number ONE is on compression stroke. If I recall flywheel should be at 4 degrees BTDC when the pump marks align but check the service book. If the pump marks align but the number ONE rockers move then pump IS 180 degrees off. Also make sure the intake manifold heater works as engine won't start well cold without it. DO NOT use ether WITH the heater, use one or the other but NOT both together.
