I had 7 acres of specialty corn that was the only corn field in at least a half a mile. It also bordered a wooded river bank. Deer took full advantage of the cover with free food. Looked very similar to your damage except they left a stalk or two here and there.
I had a lot of trouble with the corn picker pulling the stalks out of the ground and dirt with roots causing a jam at the tip of the rollers. The very dry ground had an inch of rain in the middle of my picking the field, so I blamed it on that, but I'm sure there was more to it than that.
