You noted he didn't say what he is working on. How do you know his engine has glow plugs? Depending on what he is working on it may be as simple as lining up a dot in the pump's slot with one on the shaft tang. Or if the shaft is in the pump, it may be keyed or otherwise indexed to the gear it mates with. I would consider removing the rocker arm cover before pulling glow plugs, or injectors, likely needs the valves set anyway. Get the valves "on the rock" for #1's companion cylinder to put #1 at TDC compression.
Best to know what he is working on before going further with how to do it. JMHO
