Hello B welcome to YT! I am going to leave the first part of your user name off for now to see if you live up to it later. It probably makes no difference but is it a two cylinder or 4 cylinder engine. A 4 cylinder has more spark plug wires that can be mixed up when they are changed. So did the machine run and quit or are you trying to start it after it has set without use for several years? Do you know if the engine has a magneto ignition or is it operated off a battery with points and a coil? Is the battery a 6 or 12 volt? The description of way the starter is acting likely means you are experiencing a weak battery, a bad connection or the starter needs some repair.
