1) The purpose of a series voltage dropping ballast resistor is to drop 12 battery volts down to 6
IF A 6 VOLT COIL IS USED ON A 12 VOLT TRACTOR
2) If a pure 12 Volt rated coil is used on a 12 volt tractor, NO EXTERNAL BALLAST SHOULD BE USED
3) A full 12 volt rated coil has a LV primary resistance of around 2.5 to under 4 ohms, many 3 ohms
4) A 6 volt rated coil has a LV primary resistance of around 1.5 ohms
5) A series voltage dropping (12 down to 6) ballast can ONLY drop its 6 volts with ignition and points CLOSED
CHECK VOLTAGES WITH IGNITION ON AND A GOOD SET OF POINTS CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!
The current through points and coil is typically limited to 4 and under amps to increase points life and limit coil and points current A BALLAST REDUCES THAT CURRENT Check coil current with points closed
BOTTOM LINE if its been converted with a full true 12 volt coil (around 3 ohms LV primary resistance) it would NOT require any external series voltage dropping ballast
NOTE A coil thats labeled 12 volts for use with ballast is in reality more like a 6 volt coil and therefore requires the ballast just like it says
NOTE some (not sure which no warranty ask on Ford Fourm or Ford guys here) older Fords still used ballast resistance even on a 6 volt tractor and 6 volt coil to reduce current IF THATS WHAT YOU HAD BUT CONVERTED TO 12 VOLT AND A PURE TRUE 12 VOLT COIL DO NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT USE THAT BALLAST
Check to insure if you have a full true 12 volt coil ???? (around 2.5 to under 4 ohms many 3) and if so and its a 12 volt tractor I would NOT use that ballast...........
DISCLAIMER Im NOT a Ford man so see what any Ford experts have to say. If it had a 6 volt coil before it may ?????????? still have had a ballast BUT AGAIN DONT USE IF A PURE 12 VOLT COIL IS NOW USED

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
