Well, if the shoes were worn it's likely the magnets were worn as well. That's why most everyone replaces the whole backing plate when doing brakes. As the magnets get thin they have less power. But first make sure you have proper power to the brakes. Many ground to the frame and that is less than ideal. I always run a 2 wire cord for brakes so both power and ground go directly to the truck. If you have good confirmed power, try new magnets. Confirming power is harder than it sounds because you can get enough power to light a light or register voltage without getting enough amps to operate the brakes.
