Deere is the gorilla in the corner of the room that everyone like to poke at. While Cat is a similar size outfit, more of their customers are fleets with shops and professional mechanics on staff. To keep these customers Cat has long had to work with the private shops. I would venture much less construction equipment returns to the dealer for service once the warranty is up than farm equipment.
CNH, Kubota, AGCO are much smaller companies than the two mentioned prior so don t attract as much criticism.
If you look at the heavy truck market, some of those manufacturers go as far as allowing independent shops to do warranty work. Provided they are willing to purchase the tools, pay for the mechanics to be trained etc.
The interesting part of the amount of attention Deere gets is that Deere s platform is much more open for on board diagnostics than most. The only things that the dreaded laptop is required for are software updates and changing engine components. The rest of the machine can be diagnosed from the on board display. You just need the knowledge to understand it, which is hard to come by.
