Clean is a relative term, washing your hair once a week was probably the most frequent. Combng that long hair out, and pinning it up was the fashion of the day I believe. My sister has pictures of my grandma with her hair long and down as a girl of 18, but most pictures her hair was always pinned up in a bun.
