As others have said, it depends on the condition of the bore. I use a Lisle 15000 Engine Cylinder Hone. They are pricey, but a very good product. It is set to a specific diameter (not spring pressure like a ball hone or typical three jaw) and opened little by little as you work through the process. It can be used to remove ridge, restore round, and improve/eliminate taper which the other types will not do. Just be careful, they can get away from you and really hog out material.
