When I was in the vocational class at the local school with adult education classes in about 90-92 the school evidently did not know about ball type and we only had the 3 arm type for everything. I rebuilt a Kohler single cylinder engine in it. Still ran but not good. The rings were all stuck to the piston and had made some small vertical groves in the cylinder and roug hall the way, Different ones thought it had to be bored to run. I did not have the money for that and also school time would not allow it. Just used the 3 arm hone and got as smooth as could be. put new rings on the piston and used it for several years until top of piston broke off in a ring grove, the cylinder walls were just as good then as when I put it together. I was afraid when I was trying to clean the piston groves it might have cracked on but could not find any. It ran for several years before the piston broke. The piston being not cracked is more important than a perfectly smooth and shiny cylinder wall, the cylinder wall being smooth enough that a ring will not catch on the roughness. So where his pistons were stuck he just needs to clean them up to where the rust is not going to make problems with the piston movement. Just a new set of rings in an engine that was running until it was left set and probably cot water in to rust and stick the piston and rings with new rings should just run just fine.
