That 15 hour commute is a long one, but not a deal-breaker if your son decides he wants to go to TC. I assume that's going through Canada, which can be a problem from time to time. There is airline service to Traverse City, but I'm fairly sure tickets will be expensive.
I can understand why they suggest you wait until April to tour the school. Right now, all you would see is snow, ice and road salt.
