I am 83 and just bought a used 75 hp Kubota with a clutch and 16 speed transmission. I like to think I am in pretty good shape with both oars in the water. (I can still type with both hands) But this tractor is enough different from our 50hp that, in an emergency, you could get in trouble. The throttle is backwards from the 50 hp and the 50hp has a manual reverser. I find myself confusing them. And the clutch will tend to wear him out. When we change equipment, I won't let anybody between the tractor and the equipment for fear my clutch knee might give out.
If his present tractor is in good shape, he needs the HP and he understand how to operate it...WHY CHANGE? But if he insists, by all means get something that is similar to his old one. We have a HD 8ft twin screw Landpride mower and the 50 hp wouldn't handle it in heavy going. We use it to mow our meadows and weeds and want to go right along.
But, as an old guy, I understand......IF HE WANTS SOMETHING NEW.....GO FOR IT! You only get to take your experiences with you!
