The link didn't work, but occasional popping back through the intake can be caused by wet ignition, worn distributor bushings causing the points to not stay set, lean mixture, either from the carb too lean, or lack of fuel making it to the carb. Pull the drain plug in the carb bowl, catch the flow, see what you catch. There should be a steady flow, not stopping or slowing to a drip.
A rhythmic popping back through the carb that worsens with load is an indication of a flat exhaust lobe on the cam. Check the motion of the valves, check for broken springs, bent pushrods, valves out of adjustment. A loose valve seat can also cause intermittent valve problems.
