All newer cars have VIN numbers marked in multiple places, George. But if the stolen vehicles are being shipped out of the country, those VIN numbers don't matter much. And marked or not, there's always a market for parts.
A car thief picks a vehicle based on three things: how easy is it to steal, how valuable it is, and if there is an opportunity to steal it. Even the most secure vehicle ever made can be stolen by anyone with a tow truck.
A few years back, Chrysler was storing new vehicles at the Hazel Park harness track. Those Chrysler vehicles were so easy to steal, thieves would just break into them and drive them away. They had to put up huge concrete barricades to stop the thefts. I don't think Stellantis takes vehicle theft prevention very seriously at all.
