I have personally had a cam failure from the non zinc oil, it was in my Chevy 350 engine after a oil change to the new 10-40 oil. The only non stock items in it were the Edelbrock cam and lifters, nothing radical, just a better option for mileage and performance, (I got 20 mpg in my 64 truck) the cam and lifters had been in for over 50,000 miles prior to the oil change. When I contacted Edelbrock they said it has been a F'ing nightmare for all the aftermarket cam builders because there was very little notice to older car owners about the EPA decision to reduce the zinc in the oil. The only oils to my knowledge that didn't get that reduction were Diesel oils but that may have changed since they added cat converters. I have switched to 15-40 diesel oil in all my flat tappet engines, (I was told pre 85) after that they were mostly roller lifters, granted low rpm older tractors are less likely to fail as quick but when it does happen it happens fast. Oil is cheap compared to any engine rework. Just my 2 cents worth.

If it would just start when I turn the key, then I would use it more often. In addition to a bad case of old age, most of the tractor's original electrical system was simply too unreliable to keep. The main focus of this page is to show how I upgr
