Engine failure has got to be blamed on something, right? And blaming it on the wrong oil would certainly be a common go to place for the blame.

You really never hear anything anymore about the lead free gas. Use to be alot of talk about that, and what additives you should use, and this and that. But you hear virtually no talk about it now. That pretty much tells me that nobody is even using the additives anymore. And you don't really hear about more engine failures now than you did before (when everybody was supposedly using the additives).

This whole zink thing might be an example of the same thing. Not going to say there is nothing to it. The explanations within this post, of how it applies to the newer engines, sure brings some logical information to the topic. Truth is, your asking about how its absence applies to the older stuff. Not the other way around. That's where things get a little foggy, and the situation can kind of be related to the lead free gas thing.

If a guy said he had low mile engine failure on a modern high performance engine because of a zink issue and using the wrong oil, that would be a believable story, right? But another guy blames the same thing on an older wore out engine, you would have to wonder wouldn't ya? Wonder if he is placing the wrong blame on it. Maybe the same guy never changed his oil. My point being, not everything you hear may be true.

Believe what you want. Formulate your own opinion. If you take high performance and modern day sensored computerized systems out of the picture, for me the issue becomes about being wet or dry. Your main worry should be about not running your engine when low or out of oil. And change oil when recommended. Most of the early engine failure I ever witnessed myself as a mechanic, was a result of poor maintenance. To long between oil changes. And not checking oil level in between the changes. That mostly seemed to be the case. Neglect in those areas.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
