People aquire thier collections one piece at a time. But when they liquidate collections for whatever reason, this isn't thought about. Often times posting it all for sale online at once, or have a 2 day auction, or haul it all to a consignment sale for it all to be sold at once. Whenever this is done, a higher percentage goes to scrap. Collectors of old equipment are not only getting fewer for the pre 1960 stuff, but it is not thier style to buy out entire collections at once. They are accumulating it one piece at a time just like the seller aquired it.
You can sell to much stuff at one time, when it comes to liquidating life long masses of stuff. The few collectors who are still left out there, can't absorb it all if it has to be all at once. Pushed into this situation, they will just make a few top chosen selections, and let the iron guy have a hay day with the rest. They have no choice but to be that way. They can't and won't buy it all. They don't have the capability to buy it all at one time.
As far as just calling the iron guy from the git go to clean up the farm yard?? It literally depends on the iron guy that gets called. Some won't crush things that shouldn't be smashed. I know one of those. And some will crush anything that is there so much as it is made of iron. I know one of those too. Won't even pull wheel weights off of a tractor to sell separately. If it's in a lot that he buys, it'll be hauled to the place that melts stuff down.
Definately something to think about if you got a large mass of stuff, and have any care at all about what happens to it when you liquidate it.
I don't have the answer. But I just know that whole collections are not just going to miraculously end up in another collection. If you don't have a plan for it, nobody is going to come up with a plan for ya. That's for sure!!!

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
