We have applied for and received patents for products we developed. First of all, dont send your idea to the companies that advertise on late night tv. You need to seek out a good patent attorney. They are not cheap. The process is long, at least a year, probably more because they compare your idea with existing patents. Once you are issued a patent, there is an annual fee to maintain it. Also not cheap. If you do not maintain your patent, someone else could maintain it for you. If that happens, you just lost your patent. The patent usually lasts 20 years before its protection expires. Finally you will need to sell millions of dollars worth of product for a patent to be worth the effort and is usually only good in the USA. As others have mentioned, China will just steal your idea and run with it.
