Incredibly and surprisingly LONG!

You have run into two of the problems that plague this
forum. I will admit I am guilty of occasionally fanning
the flames of this first one. The problem is that some
nit-picky detail takes over a topic and it becomes a
..pee match.. between what is often referred to as the
..correct police.. on here. Then your real question may
or may not get answered. You did not ask whether your
tractor was originally positive or negative ground you
just wanted to know if the generator will charge a 12
volt battery. Hence came the somewhat appropriate
question ..what is the number on the generator? (Now
here is where problem 2 comes in I will cover in a bit)
The question was asked to possibly find out if the
generator on your tractor is a 6 or 12 volt unit and
sorry beyond a web search which shows no result for
the numbers you gave I cannot help you there.
Hopefully someone in the know chimes in on that.

To answer your original question I am no generator
expert so I polled the internet and a trustworthy reply
from a respected YT ..electrical authority.. came up, it
is in the older YT post I have linked by John T. He is a
retired electrical engineer but has also hung his
shingle as a lawyer. So for me that explains the
necessity he seems to have to drag out emphasized
words in type by repeating the last letter multiple
times. You would think a lawyer would know that this
adds no real credibility to what he is trying to convey
but he does it anyway. In that post his reply essentially
says that the 6 volt generator will work for this but it is
not designed to. It is a possibility that the fields could
burn out because it takes more current or amps
powering the fields to make the 6 volt genny produce
12 volts. He goes on to state that he has done this to a
couple of his tractors and has not had problems from
them.

So you can go with that and get a 12 volt regulator and
give it a whirl. The thing about it is that we do not
know what the condition of your generator is. (still
getting to problem 2 later)

I am a Farmall guy and the tractors I am used to hide
the generator up under the hood. And let me say I am
far from the ..correct police.. and put function way
above form. On your tractor the generator hangs off
the side of the engine in broad daylight so concealing
a change to it is nearly impossible. Cutting to the
chase if you are running 12 volts anyway I would
recommend installing an alternator. I have no idea what
your intention is with this machine. If you want to pass
it off as somewhat original and hate the idea of an
alternator hanging off the side then you should
continue exploring the generator possibilities. It is just
that finding a regulator that works reliably for a
generator system in this day an age is becoming very
difficult. Alternators are ..plug and play.. and almost
have rock solid reliability.

Now to problem two you have encountered and
actually going back I see it is not really an issue for
your post yet. But here it is anyway, this forum has two
viewing platforms ..Modern and Classic.. On Classic
new posts come to the top of the page and get

pushed down as other posts come in. Once your post
gets pushed to the 2nd page the likelihood of someone
viewing it gets quite a bit lower. In ..Modern.. a reply to
your topic brings it back up to the top of the page so it
keeps an active thread on the first page of topics
longer. The point is a lot of long time viewers here who
have the greatest knowledge for the most part use
Classic. Once your topic gets pushed to page 2 input
from them is fairly unlikely. So the gentleman who
asked about your generator number may not be back.
But if by chance he sees this he will definitely poke it
back in my face. Word is that at some point the
software platform for the forum is supposed to be
upgraded and it will become a normal one view forum
again knocking out a lot of the quirks like why I have to
..quote.. something that way instead of using regular
quotation marks on my iPhone that simply do not show
up when I post what I have typed.

What you need to change on your tractor for 6 to 12
volt conversion is the charging system has to be
compatible. Let me add this warning here, if you
decide to install an alternator and you use a common
automotive type your tractor HAS TO BE NEGATIVE
GROUND or you will immediately let the ..goody
smoke.. out of your new alternator when connected.
Continuing with the 6 to 12 volt items, the ignition coil
needs to have the proper resistance in its circuit,
meaning a 6 volt coil with a resistor or a 12 volt coil.
And the polarity connections to the coil needs to
match the battery. The ammeter if equipped needs to
have the current flowing through it the proper direction
to show a charge when the charging system is working
and a discharge when a load like the ignition or lights
are turned on with the engine not running. That brings
us to the lights if so equipped. All light bulbs need
changed to 12 volts, otherwise they will promptly burn
out.

What happened with the ..cutting out and dying
problem.. you posted about on the Case forum?

Also Dr. interested to know if you are an actual medical
doctor and if so how do you come to be interested in
old tractors?

Today's Featured Article - Usin Your Implements: Bucket Loader - by Curtis Von Fange. Introduction: Dad was raised during the depression years of the thirties. As a kid he worked part time on a farm in Kansas doing many of the manual chores. Some of the more successful farmers of that day had a new time saving device called a tractor. It increased the farm productivity and, in general, made life easier because more work could be done with this 'mechanical beast'. My dad dreamed that some day he would have his own tractor with every implement he could get. When he rea ... [Read Article]
