I've reused a head gasket on cheap lawnmowers. My friend in college bought a new ford Pinto. 4 cylinder aluminum overhead valves if I recall. Ford replaced the head gasket 2x. My friend replaced it the third time. He bought a new gasket and used Silicone form-a-gasket. I had never heard or seen silicone form-a gasket. Not sure when it came out. He applied a very thin coat of silicone on both sides of the head gasket. We drank a beer while the silicone cured. Hard to believe, the head gasket never leaked again. I've never used silicone on a head gasket. Thought I would share.
About 10 years ago I had to remove the lift cover on my Jubilee many times. Instead of buying a new gasket each time when I pulled the cover off, I coated the gasket with RTV silicone. NO LEAKS.
So yes I have reused a gasket, not a head gasket.
I may try RTV silicone on a used gasket on a flat head.
