There is a serial number stamped into the side of the block. It's stamped into a flat space I believe (if I remember right) on the right side of the block. A space that looks like it was machined off for the purpose of stamping the number. Not raised lettering as were the casting codes.
That second serial number on the block often times and likely matched the serial number that was on the serial number plate. As if they stamped the same serial number in another location. The only times these serial numbers don't match is if the tractor has had a replacement block or engine, and once in awhile the production line got out of sink at the factory. If the later is the case, the un-matching serial number wasn't off by far and would still indicate the same year as the serial number plate would have.
Replacement blocks I believe either had a blank space (no number stamped) or a number that would be way way off (not even indicating the same year).
Casting codes had a letter system with a letter to indicate year produced. Not sure how true this system ran. Extra parts were likely used after the end of the year until gone. Not sure myself what letter indicated which year. More than one letter would have to be found and varified when using this system. As in finding the same casting letter on the gist of the tractor. Not just using one letter that you found.
There were a few changes made to the H during its years of production. For example, the Deereing name was dropped from its hood decal somewhere around mid production. There were alot of such changes along the way, but I won't get into those. You'd have to be really familiar with the H to go by that as far as determining the year based upon that.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
