Our sub species of your racer is the southern black racer. Same habits of investigation and very fast. You can not catch it even with a riding mower at full speed. It will outmaneuver you. Their fastness and investigation habits is enough to scare the c-ap out of you.
I don't know why people get the perception that a snake is chasing you. You here it often around here that a cottonmouth chased me. When in fact it really is the cottonmouth is not intimidated by you. If it is headed in the same direction you run away it will not alter its path.
