Another way to approximate the resistance of field coils is for example the field current for a 12 volt generator were say lets use 3 amps,,,,,,,,,12 Volts/4 Ohms = 3 Amps so that would mean each of the series coils was 2 ohms each.
Some problems Ive seen regarding bad fields is they 1) Have a short to case/frame 2) They are open 3) The splice where they connect in the middle is open or shorted.
Some problems in armatures is they have a short or bad/burned/melted connection to the commutator segments or the bushings are bad and the armature is dragging. Or the commutator is all dirty oiled or carboned up or the insulation needs undercut
Some brush problems are they are worn down too short or the hold down springys arent keeping them pushed down tight against the commutator
