I watched tires being put on wheels and inflated at a dodge assembly plant in St. Louis. The rim was held in a linear moving fixture, the tire was pinched from the outside to about i/2 thickness (bead toward Bead) the tire was held from moving and the rim was forced up and into the tire, dragging it on the rim. Down the line 5ft a plate bigger than the tire was moved down covering the tire and compressing the (now loose) sidewall about an inch. Massive air was pushed into this sandwich at maybe 100PSI. tht top plate was released with a bang and the tire was mounted and inflated. The pressure was adjusted to about 50psi for shipment, to keep them from flatspotting. My experience was a bit different in that it was 1971, and steel wheels. I think that without sudden uniform pressure increase, the others have described a rim leak that allowed water in without demounting. Jim

The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
