PTO distance is based on rear wheel size and therefore the bottom link length. compact tractors take a very short pto, where 30 to 40 hp take a longer, and 60 hp and bigger with 38 inch tires take a much longer pto shaft. A pto shaft should... have at least..50% of the shafts engaged (overlapping) for proper strength in normal use, more is ok as long as the shaft can still move a bit in and out as needed when the the 3pt is raised and not bottom out and put pressure on the pto shaft bearing and housing. Technically you should cut even amounts from both ends if possible, again trying to make sure that at east 50% of the shafts are over lapping. Or maybe not.. per something I read somewhere? Lots of times where you add an orc, you must cut both shafts to allow safe installation..
