Rooftop solar is better because you are selling the electricity to yourself at retail rate, not to the utility at wholesale rate. My state claims to offer something like a 2/3 rebate on rooftop solar. To be 'green' and all. They have nice online tools that use an arial photo of your house and weather data to predict the generation rate. Then they size the system for you and give you a quote.
They quoted me $30K...IF I used them as an installer. I looked at the proposal and spec'ed it out myself, materials only, doing the labor myself. Pricetag--$10K. So I call up my state renewable energy office and ask them Hey, can I get 2/3 off the price of my do-it-yourself version? It will only cost the taxpayer $6700, not $20K. Seems win-win.
They said 'no.' The rebate is only through the 'designated installer.' So basically it is 'corporate pork,' where certain certified installers qualify for the 2/3 payment from the state and the homeowner pays the same regardless. The $20K of taxpayer money goes to the installer. And only the ones on their list. A scam if you ask me.

What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
