Past policy of being "nice" to the customer resulted in tens of thousands of dollars of unsold NOS parts, that nobody will ever come looking for, accumulating in local dealer stockrooms. All of that is lost money for the dealership and manufacturer. It adds up.
If they sold these o-rings regularly they would stock them. You're probably the first person in 20 years to come in looking for one, and it'll be another 20 before someone else comes looking, if ever.
