I purchased a 1100 MF today with some engine noise. The owner claimed he clogged up his round baler and it shut the tractor down. After cleaning the baler and starting the tractor back up it developed a "knock". I was pretty confident it was something simple so I bought it. Upon getting it home I pulled the valve cover and ran it. Everything looks good on the top end. So I said screw it and pulled the pan. All the main bearings look decent enough. #1 and #5 rod bearings had some significant grooves but nothing that made me think that was my issue. I m going to order a set of bearings and throw an oil pump on it while I m theyre but I m afraid the bearings aren t the issue. Also the pan was clean as a whistle. Small amount of "grey sludge" like bearing material but again they didn t look too bad. Was hoping someone had another idea where to go? I was thinking bad injector maybe? It is white/grey smoking pretty good.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
