With the engine off grab the pto shaft and pull it in and out. If you can move it more than about 1/32'' the circlip that holds the pto shaft bearing in place has been popped out of the groove it fits in. You will need to pull the shaft to repair it. Usually the problem is caused by the driveline on the mower being too long so that when you raise the 3 pt lift it jams the pto shaft into the tractor and pops the circlip out of place. Pretty common on all of the older Fords.
