That's because the site split the thread so this reply showed up as a complete new thread. Thread splitting is caused by the interaction between classic and modern.
Some of these old spreaders just used a piece of hose, not sure of the type, maybe hydraulic? Clamped on the PTO shaft and clamped on the input shaft of the spreader.
I think we have an old Cyclone out in the shed, and it uses a flexible cable shaft, but I can't imagine where you'd ever find one. I'll bet they haven't made these spreaders in 50 years.
