I spend thousands of dollars at HD every year, and I've found their employees' knowledge varies from clueless to expert. A lot of the folks who work there formerly worked in the trades and decided to go with a steady paycheck and regular hours. Others were hired off the streets and don't know a ball valve from a cinder block.
The other day I picked up a couple of sheets of 1/2 inch BCX plywood. It didn't have a bar code on it, but I guess they use the paint stripes on the ends of the sheet to identify them. So the cashier rings it up and the price is quite a bit higher than it should have been. I looked and she had rung it up as MDF, which it clearly wasn't. I said ''it's plywood, not MDF''. She says ''I'm just going by the markings'', and proceeds to show me how that worked. I pointed on the screen where BCX was listed next to the MDF. She entered the BCX, and the total came up to over $200! Yes, she forgot to take off the two sheets of MDF.
