2X on the hand powered auger that Cityboy posted. The only times I will used a clam shell post hole digger is when there is not enough room to to rotate a hand auger. Otherwise I use a hand auger, much easier and faster than a clam shell and less chance of injury than an engine powered handheld post hole digger.
A tractor or skid steer mounted post hole digger is the ultimate if you can afford one, or hire one.
Hand held augers are great for ice fishing on three feet of ice, but are too unpredictable and dangerous for me to use to dig a post hole. I will dig post holes by hand or hire the job out before I will use an engine powered hand held auger in dirt.
