I think it was an F-12 or F-14 McCormick. No idea what year it was made. I was in the seventh grade, 13 years old, and Gary Gordon, an eighth-grade friend, owned the tractor. We would cut mine props and we would use the tractor and a rough homemade trailer to haul them to the highway for pickup. I don't know the history of the old McCormicks, but I think that this one was originally on steel wheels and later converted to rubber. It was slooooow on the road. We drew straws to see who HAD to drive the tractor to the next mine prop patch. I remember Leroy, another boy involved in the enterprise, cranking the old tractor - trying to start it. He loudly asked, ''How long do you have to crank this thing to start it?'' Gary's father was nearby and he said that you had to crank it until the water boiled in the radiator. Leroy was a hoss. Gary elbowed me and we watched Leroy whipping the crank like a madman, then feeling the radiator to see if it was hot. Good old days, I guess. No money, but fun times going broke.
