Do not know whether it is common world wide, but here in Norfolk, a number of machines like tractors and cars are all given girl's names by their owners. Even if some have a boy's name, they are still referred to as 'she'.
My own tractors are known as Harriet (TE20), Henrietta (Fordson Major) and Dotty (Fordson Dexta). I also once owned one of these and she was always 'Alice'
