Woody, I really enjoyed your post on HP. On here or Rummy's JD page, I am always discussing the laws of conservation of energy etc. and that hp is a function of torque multiplied by rpm. Therefore, if you add more reduction gears, they increase torque, lower rpm, and put out less actual hp due to friction (heat) losses in the gears. Old JD's with big stroke get most hp from torque (at low rpm) and therefore, when they lug down, the hp is almost still as much. However, Ollies and Binders get most hp from higher rpm, therefore, when they lug down and loose substantial rpm, their net hp drops way down. In dead lugging pulls with non progressive sleds. JD's do great, but with progressive sleds, the high revvers store that early energy from high hp output in the form of sled momentum (kinetic energy = 1/2 Mass x Velocity) which helps move them farther once their hp drops off. The Johns, slow off line, cant store that early energy and Im sure you see those fast speeders off the line are often the winners simply due to laws of energy, momentum, kinetic energy etc even though the Johns still do better under dead pull lugging.
