I have owned a 1951 Ford 8N for about two years, and it has been a good tractor. But, it recently started running rough, and now will not start. I have a very capable mechanic, who has: rebuilt the carbarator, tuned the motor, replaced all of the ignition parts, cleaned the fuel lines and tank, reset the timing, etc.. The mechanic seems to think the problem is related to the timing gears and their misfunction, But, we have not opened it up because the mechanics at the Ford Tractor dealership say that timing gear malfunction is rare and/or almost impossible. Right? The tractor will not start. It has started on occasion but spits, sputters runs briefly, and quits. Can anyone help?
