The Select-O-Speed transmission is not one of Ford's Better Ideas. To purchase a Select-O-Speed tractor for utilitarian purposes (work) is... questionable, at best. Too many things can and do go wrong with the SOS, the mechanics qualified to work on the SOS are, for the most part, retired or (no offense) dead, and parts are generally unavailable. It takes more than changing the fluid. The four-speed and five-speed section (combined) in the original Ford tractor shop manual (SE-8175 46117, copyright 1962) is 11 pages long. The Select-O-Speed section is 57 pages long. I have spoken with and/or corresponded with hundreds of vintage Ford tractor owners/restorers/collectors/mechanics. The vast majority of SOS owners (etc.) are very disappointed with the performance of the Select-O-Speed. I agree with Clyde, and have made the same suggestion many times to those who ask.
