NEED ADVICE!!!

I am in the prosess of restoring a 1948 grey fergi. The previous owner at some point replaced the engine with that of a baler (possibly a massy haris) unfortunutly the starter motor has also been removed and a blanking plate put in its place. I have been told that I can not fit one because where the barrel and pinion engage there is no hole in the gear box. Is this true, if you no please reply any advice i would be most greatful for THANX!!
