Consider the Golden Jubilee/NAA or Hundred series Ford tractor. The way the 8N's are selling these days, the slightly newer Fords (GJ/NAA, 600 series, 800 series) aren't that much more, say a couple hundred dollars. Much more tractor for the $$. The 8N is a good little tractor and has one heck of a fan club, but those who know will admit that it is and has always been underengineered and underpowered. The hydraulics on the later tractors (post-1952) are better, horsepower is better, heck, everything is pretty much better. Now if you really wanted a nice "old" Ford tractor, look for a 660 or 661, better yet an 860 or 861 Ford. Five speed transmission, live PTO w/two stage clutch, and right at 45 horsepower (on the 861), compared to about 27 hp on the 8N. I think the 860/861 is a little more tractor than you might want, but I wanted to let you know that there are many different vintage Fords out there (11 different series and 154 different models produced from 1953-1962). Consumer product identification is a great thing (everyone knows of the 8N) but do not jump into the N series without doing a little homework. Dan NAA60512 If you decide that you may be interested in the later, post-1953 Ford tractors, I have gathered a lot of information on them. You may view this information by clicking here.
