: : : : I'm looking to buy a small (<20HP) garden tractor w/PTO to use primarily to mow less than 1/2 acre, blow snow off a large driveway, light hauling, and perhaps do some tilling. I'm avoiding the newer "Craftsman/MTD/NOMA lawn tractors" and am looking for an older, more heavy duty one. I am looking at primarily Cub Cadets, Bolens, WheelHorse, Simplicity, Gravely and John Deeres. Availability of parts and attachments, in addition to the performance of the tractor is a big factor in the decision. : : : : Any advice on specific ones to look for or to avoid? : : : : Any recommendation : : Kent, : : I would stay away from the Cub Cadet as they have a poor repair history . The same goes for Bolens. : : Simplcity is a very good tractor but I have heard that parts are high. The same goes for John Deere. : : Wheel Horse tractors seem to be very good .Don't know about Gravely.I have used a 1988 Craftsman : : for some pretty rough mowing . It does not have a PTO though. : : Good Luck, : : Ford Man : I disagree with Ford Man and recommend you look at Cub Cadets. I currently run a 1971 model and it has been well used and still gives good service and is one tough little tractor. : Harold H I disagree with Harold H. The 1971 Cub Cadet he owns was purchased prior to MTD buyout of IH (Cub Cadet). Stick with the Wheel Horse.
