IH has been using the PTO mounted hydraulic pump as an alternative to a tumbling rod for air planters for decades. Its also done with other planter makes and some wide mower/conditioners. There's a point where the added power losses of the hydraulics are overcome by the convenience of hoses and hydraulic motors. I'll be really serious about going hydraulic if I was to crunch the gear box in my old Hesston mower/conditioner. I could get gear ratio, flexible coupling, and no PTO shaft by selecting pump and motor appropriately. If I ever try raising oats and windrowing them I WILL put a hydraulic motor on the CASE windrower that's now ground driven but the sickle is too slow for modern weedy oats. I'll leave the apron ground driven. On my 4020 I've tapped into the main hydraulic lines for the loader and could probably get 15 to 18 gpm for motors if I wished. Still won't run a brush hog or mower conditioner but would sure run the windrower. Skid loaders are all hydraulic drive, propulsion and bucket. Gerald
