What does your distributor look like inside when you open it after the engine won't start? Any moisture present? If so, you have your answer. If not, your problem is probably the lack of good capacitance (a good condenser-- properly hooked up, as JohnT says). The capacitor ("condenser") protects your contact points--keeps them from wearing away and failing after a very short time. Without good capacitance, even with brand new (or freshly filed) points, engine performance would probably fall off after an hour or two of running at load speed--as the contact points erode. But you may not notice the change until you try to start the engine, as that is a real test, especially after it sets a day or two. The fact that cleaning (fileing, I assume) cures the problem for a while strongly suggests capacitor troubles.
