Noel, Often someone gives a tractor a "new set of rings" thinking they really did something and overhauled it, but it still uses oil and smokes blue (oil) smoke. The problem is, the cylinder walls may not have been honed down properly or maybe there was excessive taper in the cylinder bores. In either case, that re ring job is inefficient and it can still easily use oil and blow by compression past the rings. Im assuming youre getting blue oil smoke as Gerald asked, and not white or black ??? If its blue, is there also excessive smoke coming out the crankcase vent tube, which confirms it is indeed blow by past the rings and using oil. Also, its possible the valve guides/seals can be bad causing blue smoke and the rings could be good??? Does it smoke worse at idle (high vacuum) or under a heavy load?? If a lot of smoke at idle and start up which then goes away and no blue smoke under load and not much smoke out the crankcase vent tube, that points more to valve guides than rings. If more blue smoke under load, that points more to rings which may be bad rings or the taper was bad or cylinders werent honed properly. The valve guide/seal problem is more noticeable in an overhead engine than flat head, but even in a flat head, the vacuum can suck up some oil causing blue smoke if valve guides/seals are real bad. So, see if your smoke is oil (blue) or black or white as Gerald suggested, then if blue, try and see if its blow by past the rings or more of a valve problem. In either of those cases, I suggest overhaul if youre gonna run it under heavy loads in hot summer months. PS All I would say about Marvel Oil and others is it probably wont hurt it (but Im not sayin it would help your situation either) John T in Indiana jmn50@msn.com
