I love this topic. You may want to look up the term 'Edison Effect'. It has to do with G.Taylors comment below about the polarity of the spark plugs and erosion of the plugs. Below is an excerpt from a post by Dell(WA) that he did on the Ford N Board not too long ago: "the reason for all the concern about positive and negative ground are several fold. 1) there is an obscure electric phenonomon called the "Edison Effect" and in theory, positive ground will make your sparkplugs last longer. In the long ago time (1920-30's) this was a major concern. Modern sparkplugs due to improved design and materials, not a problem. The effect is still there, just not a problem. 2) The semi-conductor diodes in modern 12 volt alternators are very polarity sensitive and won't work with positive ground. This should not concern you because your tractor is using the original 6 volt generator. 3) Positive ground was (IMHO) Ford's Lawyers attempt to get around GM's patents on the Kettering Ignition System."
